Teaching Sentence Types with Movement

Can grammar be fun?? Yes!! All you have to do is add a little movement! 💃🏻
Yesterday when I taught sentence structure and types, I had to keep moving around the room, waving my arms, and talking in my most excited cheerleader voice to keep the students engaged. 

By the end of class, I was exhausted, and they were bored. And to be honest, I’m not sure how much they retained since it was mostly me doing all the work. 

I knew I had to do something different today. I gave each person in a group a small white board and a category (independent clause, conjunction, and subordinate conjunction) and we played a little something I called Sentence Meet Up. 


How it works...


1️⃣pass out white boards to all of your students 


2️⃣ assign each students a component (independent clause, conjunction, subordinate conjunction) and have them write it on their white board 


3️⃣ display what type of sentence you want them to make on your smart board (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences) Then, set the timer for one minute.


4️⃣ Students find others around the room to meet up with to form the requested type of sentence. 


5️⃣ Once they meet up, they work together to actually write the sentence on their whiteboards before the timer runs out. 


6️⃣ Have them switch white boards with someone in their group and switch around again.
