Connotation & Denotation: The Quest Activity Pack
Connotation and Denotation Quests
These quests are an engaging and creative way to help your students apply their understanding of connotation and denotation.
The Quests:
Quest 1: Part One- Students will determine if the underlined words in the six sentences have a positive or negative connotation. Part Two- Students are given six words and will write a sentence with each word and determine if it had a positive or negative connotation.
Quest 2: Part One- Students will take the underlined word in six sentences and change it to a word that has a positive connotation and a different word with a negative connotation. Part Two- Students are given a sentence and will use it as a jumping off point to write two passages with contrasting attitudes.
Quest 3: Part One- Students will read two paragraphs and determine the tone based on the words used in the paragraph. Part Two- Students will select a product from the three provided and write a positive and negative review of the product ensuring the words selected indicate the type of review.
Quest 4: Part One- Students are given five team names. They will write about their impression of the team and predict their record based solely on the name. Part Two- Students will come up with a team name that represents the impression they want their team to give off.
Quest 5: Part One- Students are given five personalities. They will write the denotative meaning and the connotation (positive or negative) of each word. Part Two- Students will choose two personality traits from the list in part one and write a short that represents the connotative meaning of those traits.
