Inference - Introduction Hook Activity 

Inference Mystery Box

If your students struggle with or lack a basic understanding of inference, then this is where you need to start! This activity will help students develop their own definition of inference through a series of investigations.

Mystery Box Station Activity:

1. Put everyday items in tissue boxes

2. Have students stick their hand in the boxes.

3. They will use clues and past experiences to make predictions about what is in the box.

4. Afterward, they will come up with a definition for inference based on the activity.

Inference Mini Lesson

This foundational mini lesson will help your students gain a basic understanding of inferencing.  Students will go through the notes to learn the steps of how to make an inference and then practice the skill with four engaging activities.

Inference: The Quest Activity Pack

Inference Quests

These quests are a perfect way to practice how to infer conflicts, character traits, and motivations. 

The Quests: 

  • Quest 1: Students will read a short passage, answer two inference questions, and create a text message conversation. 

  • Quest 2: Students will read a short passage, answer two inference questions, and continue the story. 

  • Quest 3: Students will read a short passage, answer two inference questions, and create an Instagram post for the main characters. 

  • Quest 4: Students will read a short passage, answer two inference questions, and continue the story. 

  • Quest 5: Students will write their own story where the reader has to infer character traits and the conflict and write three inference questions.

Inference Graphic Organizer

Use this graphic organizer to help students practice inferencing. Students will pull clues from the text and combine it with their background knowledge to make inferences. This graphic organizer can be used with a story or passage of your choice.
