Mood and Tone Mini Lesson

This mini lesson will help your students start to think about and understand how and why an author chooses the words they use. With this mini lesson, you will teach your middle school students the meaning of tone and mood and how to identify it in text. It is a great starting off point for analyzing text.

Mood and Tone Quests

These quests are an engaging and creative way to help your students practice and apply their knowledge of mood and tone.

The Quests: 

  • Quest 1-3 : Part One- Students will analyze a picture to determine the mood. Part Two-Students will write a story that represents the mood. For each quest, students will use a different method to create the mood- through setting, tone, or genre.

  • Quest 4: Part One- Students analyze lyrics from “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac for mood and tone. Part Two-Students will find a song with a similar mood and tone and explain how the lyrics from the song developed the tone.

  • Quest 5: Part One- Students will watch a commercial and write about how the mood and tone are different. Part Two-Students write how the mood changes based on the perspective of the viewer.
